In 2015, a group of Santa Barbara residents from different political and professional backgrounds met to discuss ways they could work together to improve life in their community, state, and country. Despite their different experiences and perspectives, they were all concerned by: increasing polarization in politics at every level of government; endemic dysfunction and poor performance across government; public policies that were divorced from common sense and values shared by Main Street Americans; the constant creep of government into the private and economic lives of Americans; and a complete lack of concern for the fate of future generations.

Rather than accept this unappealing status quo as the inevitable result of political evolution in the United States, this group decided to offer an alternate and unifying centrist vision for government in this country and to promote civic engagement to achieve that vision. In December 2015, Reason in Government was founded to advance these goals.
